Mazeppa was a Ukrainian cossack who, as a young man, had an affair with the wife of a Count at the court of King John II Casimir Vasa of Poland. As a punishment he was tied to a wild horse and set free to gallop. He survived his ordeal and lived to be an old man. The story became the subject of a famous poem by Lord Byron.
